AutoCAD 2012: Point Product vs Suite

If you have AutoCAD 2012 and a Building Design Suite 2012 on your license server, it's best to install AutoCAD 2012 from the Building Design Suite Package to all of your workstations.    We had discussed this problem and solution in a previous post:

Basically, AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD 2012 in the Building Design Suite are not exactly the same.  The one in the Building Suite is slightly newer because is has some upgraded licensing components that affects license cascading.

Redundant servers and License borrowing Error The Borrowing Period established for the license server is not valid

When you try to borrow a license from redundant license servers, you might the following error if the license servers are configured wrongly in the client.

The Borrowing Period established for the license server is not valid

Contact your system administrator to have the borrowing period reset to a value of at least one day (24 hours)

Please make sure licpath.lic is configured to use redundant license servers and ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE environment variable is not created to point to the license server.

This solution shows you the behavior on the client

Hence if the ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE environment variable is defined it would override licpath.lic, resulting in the above error when connected to redundant license servers.

Consequences in using drawings or components from drawings created with a Student version of Autodesk products.

As you know, Autodesk sells educational versions of software on the condition that the software will be used for educational purposes only.

When you try to open, insert as xref or block, or inserting a component from a drawing created with a student version of our software, in a commercial version, you will have two dialog boxes warning you:

The first dialog box:

And if you click on Continue the current operation, a second dialog displays:

On other side, if the student version drawing is used as external reference for different projects, each time you open the main drawing in each project, you will have the same dialogs appearing and same behavior on plotting, since this information is transmitted from the student version drawing to the main drawing.

Please note that using drawings created with student version for commercial purposes is against the Autodesk Software License Agreement, but also, the printed output will display a banner like explained in the first dialog box, each time you plot the drawing.

Based on this information, when you receive the first warning dialog box, you should click on the Cancel the current operation to avoid the disagreements this can cause.

General Systems: The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Autodesk registry key

Here are a series of error codes that we often get in Product Support when installing an Autodesk product:

  • 1402
  • 1603
  • 1619

These vague Micosoft System Error Code definitions can be found here:

Typically, these installation errors have been resolved by turning off User Access Control and Anti-Virus software.  Is some instances, the installation will start working when you delete the following registry key:

NOTE:  Backup any Registry key before deleting it!

Please check out the following posts for reference:

Error installing the language pack

We face situations where the installation fails when installing the language pack with an error 1624.

The error 1624 is a general windows error referring to an error applying transforms.

Normally this occurs after uninstall the product, and the uninstallation failed to remove temporary installation components.

These failures, create an entry inside the <Product>Installation(<Lang-Country).log file against an .mst file in the C:\WINDOWS\Installer directory.

Search for a line like this (bellow) just before the line containing the mst file pat.

Property(S): SourcedirProduct = {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx} where each "x" correspond to a specific code.

Open the registry editor, search for this key, back up and delete each entry containing this key.

Close the registry editor.

Run the installation. The Language Pack should now install correctly.

General Licensing: Using Flexlm Diagnostics to confirm if you are running an options file

This is in reference to a previous post:

I have included a quick video of the workflow with Autodesk Mudbox 2012 because this setting (FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS=3) will work with all Autodesk products.

Mudbox Flexlm Diagnostics=3

You can refer to this technical solution for a list of FLEXnet® feature codes for Autodesk products for 2012:

A really nice benefit of this diagnostic is that it will also confirm if you are running an options file!

Maya 2012: Standalone MatchMover 2012 will not run and have a licensing error

Maya 2012 included Maya Composite and Matchmover.  In some instances,  you have installed and licensed Maya 2012 Standalone.   When you launch Matchmover 2012 Standalone, you may get this error:

A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager.
If you are still unable to access a license, contact your system administrator.
Error [-1.359.2]
Error 20

A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager.
Error 20

Batch render licenses when you have both normal Maya and Maya Suite licenses

When you have both 'normal' Maya and Maya Suite licenses in the same license file, you need to make sure that all these licenses were generated on the same day; otherwise you will not get the number of batch licenses you're entitled to.

To verify the date when the license has been generated, check the value of the ISSUED tag inside the INCREMENT section on the license file. ISSUED=06-Jul-2011

You can double check if the number of batch render licenses is correct by addition the number of seats you have in the license file for Maya and Maya Suite licenses (the last number on the line starting by INCREMENT) and multiplying that by 5.

That should match the total of seats for the 85694MAYAMMR1_F increment lines and the number of seats shown for that feature when you perform a status enquiry in LMTOOLS->Server Status.

Sketchbook Pro iPad: What pen can I use?

One of our bloggers, Giancarlo Molo, recently picked up an iPad 2 and we was able to get Citrix & AutoCAD to work on it.

This was another  cool Autodesk blog that I stumbled upon. If you use Sketchbook Pro on an iPad and  you are looking for a pen for the iPad, check out this post:
