Windows 7: What is SuperFetch?

I was working with the Revit development team and what tests they use as the 'standard' for benchmarking launch times.  One of the items in the Windows Services that was disabled for testing was "SuperFetch". Ultimately, you should enable this cool feature in Windows 7:

AutoCAD Architecture 2012: Error 1328 when installing SP1

There have been reports that if you try to install AutoCAD Architecture 2012 SP1, you may encounter an Error 1328.  Error applying patch to file C:\Config.Msi\*.temp.

To resolve this issue, you just need to click on the Ignore button and AutoCAD Architecture 2012 SP1 will be updated/installed.    This issue has been reported to the AutoCAD development team.

Licensing: options file when there are multiple FEATURE lines for a single feature in the license file

If you have the a license with multiple feature line for a same feature code, applicable when you have some package license and some temporary license in the package

#AutoCAD Mechanical Package License.

PACKAGE 64400AMECH_PP_F adskflex 1.000 \

    COMPONENTS="85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F 85545AMECH_PP_2011_0F \

    71800AMECH_PP_2010_0F 59200AMECH_PP_2009_0F" OPTIONS=SUITE \

INCREMENT 64400AMECH_PP_F adskflex 1.000 permanent 17 \

    VENDOR_STRING=commercial:permanent SUPERSEDE DUP_GROUP=UH \

#AutoCAD Mechanical 2012 Temporary License.

INCREMENT 85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F adskflex 1.000 24-feb-2012 6 \

If you create an options file with RESERVE command

RESERVE 5 85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F HOST_GROUP Myeng_group

It will actually reserve 10 Licenses for the same group, because feature code 85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F is repeated in the license file.

In order to specify the exact seats to reserve one has to distinguish a particular group of license by using the option Keywords

The following option keywords are used as feature name modifiers to denote a specific group of licenses:

• KEY=

• VENDOR_STRING= (if configured by the publisher as a pooling component)

• dist_info=

• user_info=

• asset_info=

( page 116)

In the above example we could use either one of the following line depending on if the permanent or temporary license which needs to be reserved.

RESERVE 5 85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F:VENDOR_STRING=nfr:extendable HOST_GROUP Myeng_group

RESERVE 5 85733AMECH_PP_2012_0F:VENDOR_STRING= commercial:permanent HOST_GROUP Myeng_group

AutoCAD Family: Missing User Interface elements in Windows 7

This one is hard to explain so I am going to include some screen shots.  AutoCAD Mechanical 2011 looks fine but AutoCAD Mechanical 2012 doesn't and has some missing User Interface elements.

AutoCAD Mechanical 2011

AutoCAD Mechanical 2012

NOTE:  When you try to resize AutoCAD, the "A" menu also lags on the desktop.  The resolution of the laptop was set at 1900 x 1200.

Acad-2012-doesn't work

The basic troubleshooting steps that we tried included the following:

1. We reset AutoCAD by deleting registry keys and files as noted in this solution:

NOTE:  We had to extrapolate the registry keys for 2012.

2.  We updated and used the default settings in the Adaptive Degradation and Performance Tuning Dialog Box.

3. We also used a saved Default profile (.arg) on a vanilla install of AutoCAD.

In the end, there were 2 solutions:

1.  We used a Windows 7 theme that didn't use Windows Aero.

2.  If you revert back to a Windows Aero theme, we changed the Text size to 100% or 125%.  In this case, the problem was caused because it was set at 150%.

Thanks to Jonathan Schmid for confirming that this solution worked.

AutoCAD Family: 3DConfig & the adskhwcertificationdatabase.xml file

For the advanced IT professionals that use AutoCAD, you may find this URL helpful:

The typical workflow is to run the 3DConfig command in AutoCAD and click on Check for Updates button.  This can be a bit tricky if there a lot of AutoCAD licenses/users at a site.

Just download the .xml file in a central location and copy it to the following folder on the client computers:

Microsoft XP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\<product name>\Rxxx\<language code>\PTXML\AdskHwCertificationDatabase.xml

Microsoft Vista/Windows 7
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\<product name>\Rxxx\<language code>\AdskHwCertificationDatabase.xml

You can also use this TS as reference and make sure that this file has read/write privileges.

Thanks to the AutoCAD & Development team for this tip.

If you manually replace this file and you run a Service Pack Update, you may get a 1328 error.   This error can be ignored.  When you run a Service Pack Update, it is also updating the adskhwcertificationdatabase.xml file.  The error happens because the Service Pack update is looking for an older version of the adskhwcertificationdatabase.xml file from an non-updated base  AutoCAD.  Just use the existing adskhwcertificationdatabase.xml file from the noted URL.

Thanks to Hashim Mundol for this tip.

In some instances, the .xml file maybe located in:  %allusersprofile%\AutodeskRendering\PTXML.   If you are unsure, you can always search for the file in the C:\ProgramData or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users folder.

Thanks to Nathan Tobin for this tip.

Maya 2012 Linux: Subscription Advantage Pack vs. Service Pack 1

Maya 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack is basically Maya 2012 Service Pack 1 with with some additional functionality.

Maya 2012 Service Pack 1 is a free patch release located here:

When you download both versions and extract them on Linux, the Maya 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack 1 has a lower cut version:

Maya 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack

Maya 2012 Service Pack 1

NOTE: I used WinRAR to extract the Linux (tgz) files on Windows.

In order to install Maya 2012 SAP, you can force the install (--force) or uinstall Maya and install the 'lower' but 'better' version.

Thanks to Nelson Cruz for sharing this interesting tip.

Maya 2012 SAP was finished before Maya SP1.  Therefore, it has a lower cut number.

AutoCAD Family: setup.exe - Bad Image - pdh.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error

Recently, we had a customer trying to install AutoCAD 2012 on Windows 7 x64 and there was an error with the following pdh.dll:

setup.exe - Bad Image - pdh.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.

The error message mentions to update pdh.dll file in:

You can try to copy a working pdh.dll file from another Windows 7 x64 workstation and copy it to the problematic computer but the error will still occur.

Using Procmon, we were able to find out that the pdh.dll file is also in another location!   From a system that is currently working, you will need to copy the pdh.dll to a USB drive or a network location in this location as well.
