Quick Start: Setting up a license server on Mac

NOTE:  Mac OS X Server is not certified to be a license server for Autodesk products.

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INSTALL_LICENSE/2015/ENU/?guid=GUID-53EE23D5-0665-4C11-8150-49055E3A2788

1.  Download and install the NLM (Network Licensing Manager) for the Mac:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Latest-version-of-the-Autodesk-Network-License-Manager.html

NOTE:  I have rarely have had to install an IPv6 server tools on the Mac.

2.  To get your serial numbers, you will need to go to the Autodesk Manage site and review the following article:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/installation-activation-licensing/get-ready/find-serial-number-product-key/sn-autodesk-account

3. To get your host name and ethernet address on a Mac:

  • You will need to open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type:

     hostname <enter>

  • You will need to open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type:

    /usr/local/flexnetserver/lmutil lmhostid <enter>

NOTE:  Typically, you should use the ethernet (primary) address of your Mac has Dual Ethernet (Mac Pro).  If your Mac doesn't have an Ethernet card, you may need to use the Wi-Fi Card (MacBook Pro 2015).  If you have an older MacBook Pro that has an Ethernet and Wi-Fi connection, you can use any type of connection.

5.  Rename the license file to adsk_server.lic and save it on the Desktop.

NOTE:  You may need to make sure that you can see file extension on Mac OS X as adsk_server.lic.txt is not a valid file extension.  You can use Textedit to view a .lic file.  You can save the license on the desktop and rename it as noted.    If they make a mistake with the SERVERNAME, you can edit it afterwards.  In some cases, you may need to use an IP address  of your Mac OS X license server in place of the servername.

Go to Finder > Preferences > Advanced and check on Show all filename extensions

File-extensions

6.  Move this file into /var/flexlm directory.    In the Finder > Go > Go to Folder...  and type:

/var/flexlm

If the flexlm folder does not exist, you will need to create it using this command in a Terminal:

sudo mkdir /var/flexlm <enter>

Type in your Administrator password.

Drag the adsk_server.lic file from the Desktop into this hidden folder (/var/flexlm).

7.  To start the license server,  you will need to go into a Terminal again and type the following commands:

sudo chmod -R 777 /var/flexlm

<enter>

sudo chmod -R 777 /usr/local/flexnetserver

<enter>

cd /usr/local/flexnetserver

<enter>

=You are going to that directory.

ls

<enter>

=You are listing directory contents.

OPTION 1 TO START THE LICENSE SERVER

sudo ./lmgrd  -c /var/flexlm/adsk_server.lic

<enter>

=You are starting the license server.  At this time, you will be prompted to enter your Administrator password.  NOTE:   You will not be able to see your password being type.  i.e. there is no feedback for data entry.

CHECKING THE STATUS OF THE LICENSE SERVER

sudo ./lmutil lmstat -a -c /var/flexlm/adsk_server.lic

<enter>

NOTE:  If there is a failure or error message that the server has not started, you must use the Activity Monitor, find the lmgrd process and use Quit Process.  Only then can you restart the license server properly.  If the server has started correctly, there will be an adskflex and lmgrd process in your Activity Monitor.

8.  It is best to not make the Mac (Hard Drive) go to Sleep.  This is a process that can't be restarted when 'sleeping'.  You can make the monitor go to sleep.  This is done via System Preferences > Energy Saver.

9.  If you have installed Maya on the same computer as the license server, there may also be a /var/flexlm/maya.lic file.   To easily edit the file in the /var/flexlm folder, you will need to run this command:

sudo chmod -R 777 /var/flexlm

<enter>

=Full permissions on this folder.  You can then edit the license file using Textedit and saving in the same folder without any permissions issues.

The maya.lic file should contain:

SERVER your-server-name-or-ip-address 0
USE_SERVER

NOTE:  There should be a the number 0 after your-server-name-or-ip-address.

Licensing: License Timeout and license server log

The Network License Manager can be configured to reclaim a license when a client workstation is idle for longer than a defined time-out period, or the connection with the workstation is lost.

For details please check the solution here.

http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=TS67304

The debug log file can be examined to determine if a license has been reclaimed. When a license has been reclaimed, the debug log file will contain a line similar to:

10:11 (adskflex) IN feature_code user_name@host_name (INACTIVE)

General Systems: What is NIC Teaming?

NIC teaming is basically combining 2 network cards to act as 1 network card to inprove bandwidth of the server and to provide some redundancy.  The full definition for NIC teaming can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_teaming

We occassionally get this inquiry into Product Support and it is not supported.  It is noted in our Technical Solution under the section Network Interface Card here:

Maya 2012: Getting BackBurner rendering on Windows and Mac OS X simultaneously

Every now and then we do get asked if BackBurner does cross platform rendering.  The simply answer is yes but there is indeed some setup involved to make sure things work.

Please check out this post at the Maya Station:

Mudbox application file has stopped working

We just noticed that Mudbox 2012 or Mudbox SAP 2012 can crash at startup with the error:

 Error

We have identified this problem to be a corruption of the directory Mudbox under My Documents.

To work around this problem, first of all, create a copy of the Mudbox directory C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Mudbox\, then, delete the Mudbox directory.

When starting, Mudbox will recreate the directory and apply the settings by default to the Mudbox graphic interface.

If you want to try retrieving your previous interface settings, copy the directory settings from the backup directory Mudbox\2012-xxx\ into the newly created Mudbox\2012-xxx directory.

Network: Autodesk online services through proxy server with SecureNAT client

We have discussed the issues with proxy server and Autodesk's online cloud services here.

There were few reported issues when "secureNAT" client is in use, these services don't work even with the work around mentioned in the link.

The issue is due to the ISA Firewall service performing reverse DNS name resolution to determine whether a rule applies for every request from SecureNAT client.

If you add Akamai hosts (*. edgekey.net & *.akamaiedge.net) to the exception lists this issue could be resolved.

Complete list of sites to have an exception rule on proxy for anonymous access would be.

*.autodesk.com

*.google-analytics.com

*.cloudfront.net

*. edgekey.net

*.akamaiedge.net

Licensing: The security system (Softlock license manager) is not functioning or is improperly installed

you have corrupted installation of an Autodesk program or if you have tweaked the registry to change the license method

You might see the following error when starting the Autodesk program.

"The security system (Softlock license manager) is not functioning or is improperly installed"

Reason for the error could be a corrupted installation of an Autodesk program or a registry tweak to change the license method from Network to Standalone.

Most cases clean uninstall and reinstall of the Autodesk Program should fix the issue.

If it doesn't fix please delete the license file and re-activate the software.

License files are located here.

On Vista or Windows 7:

C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet\adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data

C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet\adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data.backup

On Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet\adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet\adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data.backup

If the issue persists it could be related to the user permission, so please try to install and run the software as a local administrator account.

Installation: AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Material Library Error

When trying to use Material library if you get following error, you will need to repair/reinstall the Material Library using add/remove program features in the control panel.

"The Autodesk Base Texture library could not be found.

This library is needed for you to apply or edit materials. Also objects that use images from the library will not be displayed correctly in a viewport or when rendered. The expected location of the library is:
