Downloading Software: Suites + Internet Explorer + Pop-up's

I typically prefer using a Browser Download of our software but one of the more interesting granular details on using Internet Explorer to download the software is that you must enable Pop-Ups.

Allow

1.  Most of our Suites are more than 1 part.  If you see the name name_of_product_001_005.exe, you need 5 parts.

2.  Use a Browser Download if you are installing it on multiple machines so that you can deploy it easily. Also, you will save bandwidth on your network because you are only downloading the software once.

3.  If you can't get more than 1 part, please reset Internet Explorer and enable Pop-Ups in the download section in the Subscription site.  To reset your Internet Explorer, check out this KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

For additional details and a demo of how to setup your Internet Explorer correctly, please check out this demo:

Error: AutodeskInstallNow.exe Entry Point Not Found + zlib.dll + Procmon

Let me start by saying that Process Monitor [Procmon.exe] is my best friend because I have used it many times to solve various issues.

In this scenario, the problem was that as soon as you try to run Setup.exe from the install media of our software, the error was:

Civil-Error

AutodeskInstallNow.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point inflateEnd could not be located in the dynamic link library zlib.dll

Using Process Monitor, we were able to find out on the problematic computer that the zlib.dll that it was using was in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\zlib.dll directory.

Zlib-procmon

I did a quick search on a my computer [Setup.exe worked perfectly] and I noticed that I didn't have that file in that location.

I checked for the zlib.dll in the install media of AutoCAD 2014 and it existed.

Zlib-location

I also did a search on the zlib.dll file and I found out that it is used for compression.

A Dynamic Linked Library [dll] file can be placed in multiple locations and Windows will look for it in various paths set in the environment.

For this computer, the dll was in the SysWOW64 directory and it was probably from an previous install of some other 3rd party software.  When you run a Setup.exe of an Autodesk product,  Windows will look for dll files in various locations and it found it in SysWOW64 first.  In this case, the zlib.dll file that was there and the one that Autodesk was looking for was not the same version and therefore an error came up.

The solution is to rename the zlib.dll file.  For example:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\zlib.dll

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\zlib.bak

Once the file is renamed, Setup.exe will then look for the zlib.dll file in the media which is the correct version.

Thanks to Matt Urany for confirming this hypothesis was indeed true.

General Installation: Installing Autodesk products from web with ‘Install Now’ option

Since several Autodesk products (e.g. Revit 2014) on Autodesk Subscription site have “Install Now” option only, I thought I would post general recommendation that can help you solve problems with product installation.

Network Port Requirements

A message "Unable to Access Network Ports" indicates that network ports are not available on your computer. These ports are required to support the product download and installation process. They may be in use by another application, or blocked by a security firewall. You will need access to at least one http port and one https port from the following list:

  • http port 49176, 54176, or 6317
  • https port 49276, 54276, or 63276

You may be able to make ports available by closing applications. Then click Install Now again.  After the installer opens, you can reopen any applications you want.

Slow Start to a Download

Soon after clicking Install Now, you may notice that the download process seems to slow down or stop. If you do not see an error message, please be patient and allow the process to continue without interruption. The slow start may be caused by heavy traffic on the network.

Disconnected Installation

If you try to run the Setup.exe file in the installer folder (located at %SystemDrive%\Autodesk\<Product_name_version_Setup>), you will see the message "Connection Expired". Launching this setup file directly is not supported. To restart the installation process, navigate to the download web page and click Install Now for the product.

Installer not Launching

If you are using an older web browser, and download a product more than once, you may find that the installer does not launch. This behavior has occurred with Chrome version 15, but may also occur with other browsers.

The solution is as follows:

  1. Delete the installer setup files from the Downloads folder. The format of these files is
    <ProductName_Year_Language_Platform_Version>_wi_<language>_Setup.exe
  2. Refresh the browser page.
  3. On the download website, click Install Now again.

Upgrading your browser to a newer version is also recommended.

AutoCAD Family 2014: Hacking the registry to change the license from Standalone to Network

It is exactly the same as the steps noted here:

http://upandready.typepad.com/up_and_ready/2012/04/autocad-family-2013-hacking-the-registry-to-change-the-license-from-standalone-to-network.html

I have included an image of the Registry location for your reference:

Acad-registry

Just a note, one of the tools we use to test installing our software is VMWARE Workstation.  It is not certified to run any of our Autodesk products but it's a good way test a basic install of our products and to confirm if customizations in deployments do indeed work.

mental ray Standalone 2013: Product registration failed: 718E1,.

If you install mental ray Standalone 2013 on Linux and you will see the following error at the very end of the installation process:

Mr-install-error-linux

Product registration failed: 718E1,.

This is a rather confusing message that can be ignored.  The software, in fact, has been installed correctly.

Thanks to Ryan Harvey on our Maya QA team for  helping out on this post.

Network License Manager: The installation package is not supported by this processor type. Plesae contact your Product Vendor.

Problem:

When installing the Network License Manager [NLM], you get this error message:

NLM-64-bit-on-32-bit-os

The installation package is not supported by this processor type.  Plesae contact your Product Vendor.

Solution:

The error is caused because you are trying to install a 64 bit Autodesk NLM on a 32 bit Windows operating system.

General Support: Use Problem Steps Recorder to describe the issue.

As an alternative to usual methods to describe an issue (screenshots, long step by step descriptions, etc.) you may want to consider using a free tool available on Windows installations, the Problem Steps Recorder.
This tool allows you to automatically record each action you perform on screen and at the end it provides a clear and illustrated output similar to the one below, where I tried to launch AutoCAD 2013 without having a network license available, simulating a communication problem or else during a standard client-server license checkout).
This example is also showing, at the beginning, how to start the recorder.
Or, you can type “steps recorder” in the Windows search field.
You can save the recording to a zip file that contains a .mht file that you can open on a Browser.

Here is the exemple of my recorded actions:

Where is Moldflow Design Link 2014?

It is now included with Moldflow Synergy 2014 and Moldflow Adviser 2014. It is basically free. Thanks to Justin Courter for confirming this tip.

If you plan on using Moldflow 2013, make sure that you have a Design Link 2013 license.  You can easily check your license file via the license parser.

AutoCAD 2014 Non English versions + Windows 8 = .NET errors

If you are are installing...

  • AutoCAD 2014 non English version
  • Using Windows 8 operating system

You will get a .NET 4 and a .NET 4.5 Language Pack error when installing the product.

The following workaround that will help resolve this issue:

1. Copy the Media contents to a local drive or use a browser downloaded version of software.
2. Copy and backup the setup.ini file and call it:  setup-BACKUP.ini.
3. Open file setup.ini from the root folder using a text editor.
4 .Search for (without quotes) “[DOTNET4LANG]” and “[DOTNET45LANG]”
5. Add a new line “IGNORE_FAILURE=YES” for them if found. This line can be added anywhere below “EXE_PARAM=”

Below is an attachment for your reference:

Download Setup-FIX.ini
